Power Distribution Unit
(PDU or EPDU)

The power distribution unit, also known as a power distribution unit (PDU), is a power strip that is mounted in IT cabinets, often in 19-inch racks, either horizontally or vertically in a redundant arrangement (A/B – feed). The PDU distributes the power to different consumers such as servers and switches and can have different types of device connections such as IEC C19 or IEC C13.

In contrast to conventional socket strips, the PDU also has functions such as overvoltage protection, temperature monitoring or data acquisition for calculating the PUE value (Power Usage Effectiveness). For example, the PDU can raise an alarm and send an e-mail in an emergency. PDUs are often also a central building block for a comprehensive energy management system (EMS) and remote maintenance concept. With these diverse functions, power distribution units make a significant contribution to the efficiency and security of data centers. In short: The power distribution unit is an indispensable component for smooth operation in the data center!

A PDU serves as an important bridge between the management of a building, the primary energy supply and the connection of different server racks in a data center. Rack PDUs connect directly to server racks and provide power to them. As a rule, two PDUs are used for this purpose, which redundantly supply the individual IT components with energy. They can help to better regulate and monitor load balancing. Rack PDUs with particularly sophisticated functions are also called Smart PDUs or Intelligent PDUs. These include, for example, three-phase displays for powering multiple devices and remote management tools that use the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to help administrators monitor the network. Such devices have the ability to adjust and monitor performance demands from remote locations.

PDUs for IT racks form the interface between the power supply and IT components. Far too often this important component is neglected. PDU's are more than simple power strips as they are often treated as. Active measurement and analysis functions tailored to the customer contribute to the sustainable operation of your IT. In this way, peak loads or residual currents can be precisely analyzed and evaluated.
