Supercapacitors (Supercaps)

Supercapacitors are a more efficient and environmentally friendly form of energy storage compared to traditional methods. They take up less space, are maintenance-free and contain no harmful substances. In addition, supercapacitors can help build a highly resilient power system, which is particularly important when dealing with critical infrastructure.

The Latest Energy Storage Technology

But how do supercaps actually work? And what is their potential for the energy transition in Germany?

Supercapacitors are electrochemical energy storage devices that, unlike batteries, do not require chemical reactions to store energy. Instead, they take advantage of the physical properties of electricity and magnetism. Supercapacitors can absorb and release very large amounts of energy within a short period of time - up to 1000 times more than conventional batteries. Their service life is also significantly longer: while batteries have to be replaced after around 1000 charging cycles, supercapacitors can withstand around 100 million charging cycles. They are also more robust than batteries, so they can also be used in harsh environments.

All this makes supercapacitors a promising technology - especially for use in electric vehicles or as energy storage in the data center. They are also more robust than batteries, so they can be used in harsh environments.

If supercapacitors are to be considered as energy storage devices in the data center, extensive expertise in dealing with this technology is required. So far, supercapacitors have mainly been used in the automotive industry and for small electronic devices - but less so in the data center environment.
